Summary
"Belongings and longings of all kinds - as possessions, as the history and furnishings of a life, and as the places in which life itself happens - preoccupy the prize-winning poet Sandra Gilbert throughout this collection. Ranging from journeys into the past to literal and figurative travels in the present, Belongings explores the question: "Where, how, and to what do you belong?""--Jacket.

Belongings
In-and-out sun like the light of her mind that knows
They gather where the light collects and falls
But though she glows but though her smile blazes
What should she do to safeguard her belongings?
The curses learned in childhood have their uses
Away from her belongings purse and keys
What happens to belongings after the grave?
Don't let my belongings go astray
Yet O it's nice that all her things are pretty
How far the age of mother father daughter!
When did her mind begin to ravel away?
At sundown tantrums shake the sunset west
Sometimes the names of sundown visitors
Back among her belongings her remains
"Add finocchio seeds to your pasta sauce for that real Sicilian flavor!"
She was
"No thank you, I don't care for artichokes,"
Chocolate
Hell is
Remnant
"It'll be reabsorbed,"
On the beach
A little night music
Night arrival in the tropics
Night cry of the frogs
Night cow
Night punch, night
Mathematicians asleep on the beach in Guadaloupe
Rollerbladers in Paris
"Seventeen" in the Marais
April in
St. Petersburg mosquitoes are really
Peterhof
Salome
At Giverny, on canvas
In my jazz
Four masks
First the fish that cling to your slithery
Then bear snout, the rubbery freight
Oh then bird-shape, sleek, aerobic
At last a butterfly?
Empire state
Sunday morning and
Skunk
A sudden stink so vast it seems some demon's.
