Summary
"Here is the first complete collection in print of all poetry by the Nobel Prize-winning writer, including his poetry written originally in French as well as his translations from the French of such important poets as Paul Eluard, Arthur Rimbaud, and Guillaume Apollinaire, none of which has ever before been published in the U.S. in the Beckett translations. The volume contains the English poems - including Whoroscope, his first published verse, as well as the thirteen poems published in 1935 as Echo's Bones and Other Precipitates - already familiar from earlier volumes of his poetry. In addition, there are the dozen poems in French which Beckett wrote in 1938 and 1939 (his first creative work in that language) and three of these are accompanied by Beckett's own English translations. Among the other poetic work included here are the six French poems written between 1947 and 1949, again with some of his won English translations at their sides, plus eight Eluard poems (in the original French and Beckett's translations), The Drunken Boat, by Rimbaud, Zone, by Apollinaire, and nine maxims by Chamfort. Beckett has produced a perfectly balanced translation which captures the tone of the French originals and are fine poems in their own right." -- Dust Jacket.
